Anti-wrinkle injections Vs dermal fillers: yes there is actually a difference
Since the 1990s we’ve seen a spike in the usage of dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections. This can be very easily attributed to Hollywood superstars and musicians presenting them as a very normal part of every day life. But what many people don’t understand is that the two are in fact very different.
There are two different sections of injectables: anti-wrinkle muscle relaxants and dermal fillers.
The differences: a quick summary
Anti wrinkle injections / muscle relaxants – used most frequently to reduce frown lines and crows feet and prevent further development of winkles and creases. These injectables are placed in the muscles that contract to cause deep wrinkles. When injected they relax the muscles which in turn puts less tension on the skin and surrounding areas decreasing creases and lines.
Dermal fillers – used to restore volume to areas that have lost elasticity or plump areas that were never ‘full’ to start with. These are most commonly used to plump lips and restore volume in cheeks.
The tricky bit
Depending on what you are looking to achieve you may be recommended one, the other or both varieties of injectables, and in some cases, what you think you need is not actually the best option. Some ask for injectables to fill the gap when really they should be relaxing the muscles to remove the cause, others ask to relax a muscle that is being impacted by a lack of volume. It is for this reason that you need to be sure the person administering your injectables is an experienced and trained professional.
Important things to remember
Both dermal fillers and muscle relaxants aren’t a permanent fix. They both fade within 3-6 months and to maintain results you will need regular appointments.
Injectables are an option for both sexes – the desired outcomes may differ however nothing should stop men from achieving their aesthetic goals.
